The organisation was formed in March 1999 and has achieved a reputation for producing new and challenging works. Balagan works with children aged between 9 and 18, recruited mainly from schools in the London Borough of Lambeth.

The objects for which the charity was established are to:(a) encourage, promote, maintain, improve and advance education and participation in music and drama for children and young people;
(b) develop and disseminate new musical repertoire for schools.

This has been a favourite story for millions of children all over the world, and concerns the two children who are taken into the forest. The adaptation by Humperdinck will probably be well-known to many from school productions. This new musical version has taken the story and given it a few unexpected turns along the way. It has a new script and new musical material is planned. Apart from the audio tracks, the CD also includes the following:

The Chalk Circle (by Marc Forde) was inspired by the Brecht play The Caucasian Chalk Circle. This musical can be enjoyed by children (and adults!) of different ages, and follows the story of a maid (Grusha) and the troubles she has when she saves the baby Prince from a castle under attack. She is force eventually to go to court, where she is placed at the mercy of a judge who is not all seems. Apart from the audio tracks, the CD also includes the following:

The Magick (by Marc Forde), was a piece inspired by a painting by the Argentine artist Carybé, The Death of Alexandrina (A Morte de Alexandrina). It concerns the life of an adolescent girl (Alex) who discovers that she has magical powers. However, things don't go according to plan when she grows a little over confidant and, like The Sorcerer's Apprentice in Fantasia, starts performing spells that she can't control. Apart from the audio tracks, the CD also includes the following;

Orpheus (by Marc Forde), was the first musical produced by the company, and is based on the Greek myth. It was originally performed at St James Church in Piccadilly with a cast of about 100 children from 3 different schools. Thankfully, the CD was recorded with less children! We also had the delightful Johnny Morris read our narration for us as well. Apart from the audio tracks, the CD also includes the following:
